Digital flyer: what moves to the screen and what stays on paper

A printed flyer is expensive, arrives late and is out of date on arrival. What can move to the screen — and what still makes sense on paper.

The flyer is the most expensive marketing piece a neighbourhood supermarket produces: printing, distribution, and a production lead time that forces you to fix prices a week in advance. By the time it reaches a customer’s home, half the offers have changed.

What a flyer does well (and the screen does not replace)

A flyer reaches people who are not in the store: it arrives at home, in the car, at a neighbour’s door. That is its job — pulling footfall. The screen reaches people who already walked in. They are different functions, and confusing them leads to bad decisions.

The correct division

The flyer (paper or digital) brings people to the store. The screen raises the value of the basket of people already inside. Cutting the first and expecting the second to compensate is the classic mistake.

The mistake of reusing the flyer file

Taking the flyer PDF and putting it on the screen does not work: it is 30 products on a page designed to be read in the hand, at 30 centimetres. On screen, at 4 metres, none of it is legible. The content has to be rebuilt as one offer per piece, with a large price.

How to build the week’s loop

A balanced grocery loop
  • 3 to 4 anchor offers of the week (the flyer ones, one per piece)
  • 2 offers of the day, changed daily
  • 1 piece for a high-margin category (deli, drinks, household)
  • 1 brand piece (hours, payment methods, delivery)
  • 1 loyalty or store WhatsApp piece

What it actually saves

Do not drop the printer all at once — measure. The lowest-risk path is keeping the printed flyer and cutting part of the print run, putting the difference into the screen and WhatsApp. Compare footfall over the following two weeks before cutting further.

The gain that is not money

It is decision speed. With a flyer, the week’s price has to be locked days in advance. With a screen, the manager can react on Thursday afternoon to stock that has not moved — something impossible with printed material.

On that tactical use of the screen, see daily offers in a supermarket.

Frequently asked questions

Can I stop printing flyers?+

Only after measuring. The flyer does an external reach job the screen does not cover — the safe migration is gradual, cutting the print run and watching footfall.

How do I distribute a digital flyer on WhatsApp?+

A broadcast list or channel, with customer opt-in. Sending to people who did not ask burns the list and the reputation of the store number.

What image format should I use on WhatsApp?+

Portrait, legible on a phone, with few offers per image. It is a different format from the screen — the same artwork does not serve both.

Do I need a designer to produce the pieces?+

It helps, but the essential thing is consistency: same layout, same price position, same typeface. Consistency communicates organisation better than creativity.
